How does DietSensor work?

Like other leading meal logging apps, DietSensor allows you to search food or scan barcodes.

Thanks to your ultrafast and accurate SCiO scanner, you will be able to easily and rapidly scan your food or beverage.

Within seconds, you will see a breakdown of nutrition information displayed on your smartphone and the impact this will have on your nutrition goals, if consumed.

What kinds of food scans can DietSensor read from your SCiO?

You can scan any food with a single, or homogeneous, texture. In order to get an accurate result of the scan, the scanned surface of the food and its internal composition must be made of the same component. For example, mashed potatoes would be considered a homogeneous food, whereas a sandwich or a donut with chocolate frosting would not.

How do I log non-homogenous foods into the DietSensor app?

We want to make sure that you can log any food, even non-homogeneous foods that you cannot scan into the DietSensor app. That’s why we have embedded one of the most extensive food databases in the world, with more than 600,000 food items from 19 countries, in 12 languages.

This enormous database is powered by Fatsecret, a strategic partner that provides us with the best database on the market using an open API platform. You can easily and quickly log your food using a search feature or a barcode scan.

How long does a scan take?

DietSensor’s typical read from your SCio Scan is approximately 8 to 10 seconds. That’s 1-2 seconds to aim your SCiO scanner, 2 seconds to scan, 1 second for analysis, and another 4-5 seconds for transmitting the spectrum and getting the results through a 3G Internet connection on the DietSensor App. Transmitting and receiving times may vary depending on your smartphone data connection.

How close do I need to hold the SCiO to food in order to scan and get a nutrition reading?

The App tells you before each scan what is the correcte scanning distance, usually half an inch, except for the raw fruits and veggies where you should almost create contact with SCiO. How long does your SCiO battery last?

Originaly, SCiO could perform around 300 scans before it needed to be recharged – the equivalence of about a week of expected, standard use.

Can I contribute to the database to help expand it?

We would be thrilled to gather a community of contributors to accelerate the growth of the DietSensor food algorithm database. If you are interested in contributing, please let us know via the contact us page.

What minimum system requirements are needed to run DietSensor?

DietSensor will run on iPhones 5C, 5S, 6, 6 Plus, 6S and 6S Plus with iOS 8 or higher. It will run on Android-based phones 4.3 or above. Note that you will need Bluetooth 4.0 connection to pair with your SCiO.


I get no result and a message saying "This food is not supported ..."

Check the error code at the end and send us an email explaining what you are trying to scan and with what food family. Especially if you get a code “Model not found”.

Most of the time, it happens on raw vegetables or fruits because you should almost touch them without the shade. Or else, using the shade on other food families would solve your problem. Finally, check the unsupported food list at the bottom of the INSTRUCTION screen.

My SCiO keeps disconnecting

This should not happen if you don’t turn off the app or the bluetooth and if your battery is not discharged. Please contact us.

My SCiO does not appear in the SCiO CONNEXION screen

Sometimes bluetooth protocols are mysterious. It could happen if you did not disconnect properly by turning SCiO off first. The most simple way to reset your connexion is to kill your app and start it again.

Which languages and countries are supported by the DietSensor app?

The DietSensor app is available to download in English and French, from all AppStores of the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom and USA). Other countries may follow in the future.

If your phone language is in French, the app will display french, otherwise, the app will display english.

The classic nutritional database “Catalog” (independent from the SCiO database) is searchable in 12 languages:

This means that everybody from anywhere will be able to purchase and use DietSensor when launched, with these two limits in mind. For this reason and for now, we chose to limite pre-orders of SCiO on our website customers based in these 19 countries.

How accurate are DietSensor’s analysis results?

DietSensor uses a process called spectrometry from the spectrometric scanner SCiO to detect materials in concentrations of 1% or higher. As Consumer Physics  and DietSensor populate the databases with more varieties of foods, accuracy should improve over time. Don’t expect more accuracy than the one you get from the nutritional labels on packages. Even if we work hard to make results as accurate as possible, we priviledge a wider database that a narrow one with high lab grade accuracy. Why ? Because we believe that even an estimation will create more benefits to your diet tracking than no tracking at all.

The good news is that spectrometry even allows for detection of cooking ingredients, such as the butter on your pasta or the oil you add when cooking your meat, which is not possible with other food databases. You’d better scan than search for an equivalent in the database.

Can DietSensor detect allergens?

DietSensor is NOT a medical app and should NOT be relied on to protect you from allergens under any circumstances. As DietSensor is designed to use Consumer Physic’s SCiO spectrometric scans to measure small portions of a sample or food at a time, it cannot guarantee the absence of specific molecules on your plate or in a serving. DietSensor can use SCiO’s readings to tell you major components of foods (i.e. fat, carbs, and protein with typical concentration of 1% or more), while some allergens can be hazardous even in lower concentrations.

Does the DietSensor app consider alcoholic beverages?

Yes! But you will need a liquid device. This device will be sold online soon.

Alcohol adds 7 kcal per gram of ethanol – almost as much as fat, which adds 9 kcal per gram. Counting and tracking alcohol is key to sound nutrition, and you will see how dramatically limiting alcohol can reduce your calorie intake.

What is the SCiO scan, or illumination area?

Your SCiO illuminates a spot of light over the sample with a diameter of about 20mm when you scan the sample at a distance of 10mm from the sensor.

These specs can change over time so we recommend that you lookup SCiO’s up-to-date specs on their manufacturer’s webpage.

What does the automatic weighing feature consist of?

With DietSensor, you can indicate the weight of your portion with the touch of a finger. Unfortunately, portion estimation is often a huge source of error, and we know that our eyes will never replace a scale. To ensure maximum accuracy, we decided to connect DietSensor to a Bluetooth scale and incorporate the “Serve (and Weigh), Scan and Eat” capability.
We feel this feature should be possible anywhere, so we are now working on a new portable device that can do just that and that fits in your pocket.

If you often eat at home, you can already use the weighing feature with the DietSensor nutritions scale sold online.

How does DietSensor help me manage my health?

DietSensor’s primary objective is to facilitate food intake tracking to empower its users to follow and stick with their nutritional goals.

Additionally, DietSensor gives real time suggestions each time you scan for maximum impact and optimal results.
