Keto diet sweeteners

It’s possible to enjoy the keto diet even when you have a sweet tooth.   You can opt for calorie free sugar alternatives (hence zero net carbs) in your recipes to maintain ketosis.

  1. Erythritol is the number one sweetener for the keto diet. It’s a sugar alcohol with 70% of the sweetness of sugar and is naturally present in mushrooms and some fruits (melons, grapes).  It is available in granulated  or powder form.
  2. Stevia refers to glycosides that are extracted from the leaves of the plant Stevia Rebaudiana and are 250 to 300 times sweeter than table sugar (you only need tiny amounts to sweeten your desserts and drinks).  Stevia comes in liquid, powder, or tablet form.
  3. Glycerol is a sugar alcohol like erythritol but has 60% of table sugar’s sweetness.  It is also used as a thickening agent and occurs naturally in our body as triglycerides for example.
  4. Monk fruit sweetener is many times sweeter than table sugar, but some people dislike its fruity taste.

Other sugar alternatives like Maltitol, Sorbitol, Xylitol and Yacon syrup are not calorie free, and might cause digestive discomfort for some people.
